Now that there are so many websites in any given field, yours can be lost.  A search for sites of your theme receive hundreds or thousands of candidates.  But while visibility can be problematic for your site as a whole, each piece of content within it stands a much better chance.  As a publisher, your content is various and rich.  Each novel or publication has a very specific title and subject matter.  Each monograph, journal or textbook contains specific, relevant content arranged under appropriate headings.  Each reference resource contains highly-focused, carefully controlled entries describing each given word or phrase.

Search engines thrive on these things.  They allow it to connect users with content that meets their precise need.  In this way each page of your website can be made to fulfil the most targeted of searches, sending to you the most relevant, engaged and motivated users.   The volume of each of these targeted searches may not be great, but there are thousands of them, creating what the search industry calls the ‘long tail‘.  Long, because in total, they can far outnumber the searches for the more general themes, and you can rank well for a substantial proportion of them.  Even better, when your site ranks well for the long tail, its overall ranking improves, allowing it to compete for the more popular ‘short tail’ searches. Your content quite literally sells itself.
